It is now 4 weeks today since I had a left leg total knee replacement. I am happy to report that I am doing o.k. Not as well as I would want but apparently I am being impatient. I can now walk around the house without crutches, get into the bath and have a shower standing up and sleep for short periods on my side.

I had physio this morning and it is held at the Nuffield Health & Wellbeing Centre where there is a lovely pool and gym. My physio said he wanted to try me on an exercise bike today. (Bike - he has got to be having a laugh- the last time I sat on a bike I was about six with navy knickers). Anyway after much struggling I managed to get on the bike and then could not do a full turn but managed to move my leg back and forth and continued with that for a while whilst watching telly. Not bad I thought. Then the torture started. He took me back into the physio area and did some deep massage on my knee. He keeps me talking whilst he is doing this to keep me distracted I suppose, but it is very difficult to keep up a conversation when all you want to do is say some choice words and scream. I must admit my knee was a lot easier by the time he had finished.

The only other problem I have is that my new leg is now slightly longer than my other leg so I am walking on a tilt. I am supposed to be having the other knee done later on the year but I think I am going to try and last a bit longer before I have the other one done. I am not a coward but this operation has completely taken the wind out of my sails after having been so "in charge" and sort of active. I am keeping an open mind about a further operation at the moment.

My goal now is to get out of the house and go for a walk. This is easier said than done as I tire very easily and my back starts to complain if I am on my feet too long.

The main thing is that I no longer have the gnawing toothache in my knee and I must admit my other joints have been very cooperative and have not given me much pain at all since the operation. I think perhaps the immune system is too busy in getting the operated knee right, rather than having a gnaw at my other joints. So, yes, there are some benefits to surgery.

Will keep you posted.

Jackie

hi Jackie,

really glad to hear you are doing well,

but i can understand it having taken the wind out of your sails.

well done for getting on the Bike ... same here must have been 50 years ago with Navy Knickers .. lol Blink

both my knee's are shot to piece's with Osteo, but to be honest i can't contemplate it at the moment as coping with RA is enough for me right now.

hope you continue well, and it sounds like it was worth it for you.

Jackie - you are doing brilliantly well. After 3 months you will feel so much better and the op will be a distant memory. I had both mine done 4 months apart and then the first hip 4 months after that. Don't really want any more yet though!! Feel that's enough for a while or so!

Hello Jackie,

You seem to be doing brilliantly well after having your knee op. To be able to do the bike
exercise sounds great. I am sure though you feel frustrated.

Think Spring and then Summer soon. I went shopping with my husband today and the
temp recording in my car was an amazing 17 degree. Roll on the warmer weather

Hi Jackie,

So glad to hear you are doing so well. Its great you managed the bike, I said in a previous post my dad did this too and the difference it has made long term is amazing. Remember all good things come to those who wait, you will get stronger and keep it up with the bike, you will reap the rewards later on. I think dad was 70 ish when he had his done. Once he was stronger and more able he was doing 400 circles on the peddles per day. His knee has a great bend in it now. At first all he could do was move the peddles, but he is very determined and over a period of time achieved this.

Take care and look after yourself
